Stereoscopic Images

July 09 to date

Recently I've been making three-dimensional stereoscopic images with a pinhole camera. For information on how to view them, click here: http://www.starosta.com/3dshowcase/ihelp.html

Stereoscopy was a Victorian invention allowing people to view photographs in three dimensions. Photographs could either be placed in a specially designed viewing apparatus, or free-viewed with the naked eye. The resulting effect is uncannily three-dimensional; utterly unsettling and dreamlike.

Nineteenth Century efforts to fuse the arts and sciences fascinate me, both with regards to photography and also wider cultural movements. Lately I have been researching Victorian spiritualist seances, spirit photographs and 'scientific' investigations into ectoplasm, ESP and ghosts.
